DESIGN LED. DOUBLE DIAMOND.

My personal approach to design follows a framework combining both the Design Led Process and Double Diamond method, which includes four stages I’ve named Empathy, Explore, Execute and Evolve. The design process is not always linear due to a number of factors. Depending on the context, I have a set of activities from my design ‘toolbox’ which I use to achieve necessary goals and outcomes in each stage. Each stage is outlined below.

Empathy.

THE WHAT AND THE HOW

Gain as much context as possible, understand the core problems/challenges, gather and refine requirements to deeply understand both users and business. Gather insights through multiple research methods, analyse data, understand the goals of the user, business and product. During this stage metrics are defined to ensure I am focused and ultimately successful.

Explore.

THE WHAT AND THE HOW

Take the insights and understanding gained through the Empathy stage and begin exploring ideas and potential solutions. During this highly collaborative stage I seek inspiration and engage with many people, facilitate brainstorming sessions or workshops, gather more ideas and put as many options on the table as quickly as possible. Those I engage are Users, Product Owners, Business Analysts, Solution Architects, Developers, Testers, Designers and Business Stakeholders.

Execute.

THE WHAT AND THE HOW

After identifying a viable direction, I take those concepts/ideas and translate them into workable solutions that will ultimately serve and enable the end user with a delightful and useful experience, all while meeting the goals of the business too. This stage is where ideas become reality and user-flows, wireframes and prototypes become beneficial to the overall design process and development life cycle. I bring multiple people along the journey with me in understanding what I am doing and why. This is also the stage whereby the User Interface comes to life through detailed design implementation, to match brand and enhance the UX objectives outlined. Design system implementation and management are key to ensure a consistent and quality interface is produced that is not only appealing to end users, but also easy to implement for delivery teams.

Evolve.

THE WHAT AND THE HOW

Metrics defined upfront are measured against the current outcomes to ensure I’ve succeeded or to identify where there are still further opportunities for improvement. I take all of the above into consideration to make a decision on the next best step to evolving and continually improving the overall end-to-end experience.
